Supported Independant Living
There are an increasing number of participants receiving supports under the guidance of positive behaviour support plans. We have first-hand experience observing the challenges that arise for support workers to read through these thorough and lengthy documents, to fully understand the content and then implement the strategies the way they were intended. This is amplified in complex cases that also include highly challenging behaviours and restrictive practices. And we often find a gap between the behaviour support practitioner wanting to be present with the implementing team and participant to assist them through the strategies but being restricted due to insufficient funding and time restraints.
At Monarch, we aim to change this. Our goal is to create an environment where disability support workers caring for participants are backed by behaviour support practitioners on a full-time basis. This means that support workers will receive high level PBSP training, continuous access to expert behaviour support strategies and unprecedented in-person coaching and support.
What is Positive Behaviour Support?
Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a person-centered, evidence-based approach designed to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by understanding the reasons behind their behavior and meeting their needs. Key strategies include teaching new skills, modifying the environment, and guiding support teams. PBS aims to protect the rights of people with disabilities, improve the quality and safety of behavior support services, and reduce and eliminate restrictive practices that limit freedom or rights.
Behavior Support Plans (BSPs) are tailored to address specific behaviors, promoting positive change while respecting the individual's dignity. Specialists collaborate with NDIS participants to develop, implement, and monitor these plans. Only behavior support practitioners approved by the NDIS Commission can create these plans, ensuring they align with legal and ethical standards.
Restrictive practices—such as seclusion, physical restraint, and chemical restraint—are used in some cases but are discouraged due to their negative impact. The NDIS Commission regulates these practices, aiming to reduce their use over time and improve outcomes by addressing the root causes of behaviors.
PBS emphasizes lasting, positive change and supports people in a way that respects their dignity, reduces restrictive practices, and enhances overall well-being
